LOOK INDISPENSABLE

There is a competitive benefit to wearing well for work. However, unless you own the business, the workplace is not the place for peacock spectacles, but rather the place where a man needs to be dressed suitably every day. This is the arena in which a man should always be flawless, where every component must hold its own and send the right message. Save the humorous socks for the weekend, the crazy tie for parties and the ironic wallet for the holidays.

In its place focus on what your manager and your clients want to hear, that you're well put together, organised, faultlessly groomed, trustworthy, capable of independent thought and have great taste. The way your wardrobe looks and fits should suggest that you're active and vibrant, rather than worn-out and complacent. It's vital to project class but to stop short of flamboyance.

Think of your working apparel the way a squaddie thinks about his or her uniform, and make it a basis of pride rather than a routine. By concentrating on the excellence of your clothes, as well as the look, you delicately transmit ambition, it's about dressing for the job you want, rather than the job you already have. Your labours will be seen and, hopefully, rewarded.

Don't be. Become.
