BEHIND THE BRAND: JUNYA WATANABE

Having graduated from the impressive Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo in 1984, where fellow graduates include Yohji Yamamoto and Kenzo Takada. Watanabe began working for Comme des Garçons in the same year. Once described as the most elusive fashion designer in the world, in an exceptional interview with The Guardian newspaper. Junya Watanabe avoids media attention and has rarely been photographed. Instead, the designer chooses to let his work do the talking.

Under the direction of the label's creator, Rei Kawakubo, Watanabe held several titles at the firm, before presenting his foremost independent collection, but still part of the Comme des Garçons group. In 1992, whatever Junya does, I don't interfere, Kawakubo explains.

Menswear followed in 2001, with Watanabe's men's collections less abstract and more heritage-inspired than his womenswear. It is important that you have a purpose when you design menswear, Watanabe clarifies. From his techno tailoring pieces, which blend high-tech fabrics with traditional construction, to his fundamentally futuristic collections, Watanabe's intellectual approach has seen the introduction of new concepts of cut, fabric and styling, in addition to confirming his position as one of the most significant contemporary designers.

Don't be. Become.
